There has been some interest in putting together a combined MCSA/Oldenburgia Hiking Club meet at the Gamkapoort Dam later in the year. The suggested dates are from Friday/Saturday 11/12 October and into the following week for as long as people wanted to stay.
Accommodation would be in the cottages at the dam administered by Fox Ledeboer. See
the website http://www.gamkapoortdam.co.za/.
Activities can cater for all levels of interest and fitness and include the following: Day walks around the cottages.
Spectacular scenery and considerable wildlife. Day walk to climb the mountain to the West of Gamkapoort. Spectacular views into Gamkaskloof (Die Hel). Two day hike into Die Hel along the Gamka river and stay overnight in the caravans at Piet’s Place and then on the second day hike back over the Gamkaberg. Lots of history and spectacular views. Ride a bike down Seweweekspoort. 14 km of amazing scenery. Get fetched at the far end and then dropped off again to ride down Bosluiskloof and back to the cottages. Climb Seweweekspoortpeak. This is the highest point in the Western cape and overlooks Seweweekspoort. Just sit and chill on the veranda of your cottage and watch the play of light and shade on the surrounding mountains.
Accommodtion is fairly basic and costs around R250 pppn. Limited fridge space is available in Fox’s house and we would have to take all our food and drink with us. Water was in short supply when I was last there about a month ago but there is now some water in the dam.
People could come for a few days or stay right through to the following weekend. Once the
amount of interest has been determined, we can go ahead and make reservations.
